What will you remember about her performance? Be specific about the experience.
What i remember most about her performance was how she performed and how she was very into the music she was playing. She had many different ways of looking at music and she played so professionally.
What elements of her performance influenced what the audience heard?
I think she made a point to the audience when she said how people hear music differently and how someone playing the instrument hears something different than the person sitting out in the audience because the person playing has to hear all the unpleasant sounds that come along with playing an instrument as where the person sitting in the audience hears a much more pleasant noise. What did she mean by, "Each person experiences music in their own way"? Think about how you experience music and why everyone doesn't enjoy listening to the same music.
I think that she meant that people take in music differently and not everyone will look at music the same way. Different types of music and instruments will influence people in different ways.
Last Thursday Adriana, Cindy, and I visited the Farmers Market in Chula Vista. I interviewed a man who sold produce there named Kevin. His response to my questions are listed below.
1) What is your name and your role here at the Farmers Market? My name is Kevin, and i sell produce here at the farmers market.
2) Why do you choose to sell you produce here? Well its a well known farmers market and a lot of people come here looking for fresh produce so I'm here to sell it to them.
3) When did you first start coming here? about fifteen years now.
4) Do you garden at home? somewhat, here and there.
5) Do you work for a produce company? i work for RVR farms in Carlsbad.
6) Would you recommend others to shop here why or why not? Yes because the food is healthier and the produce is fresher with less chemicals that would be in produce bought from stores.
_________________________________ Reflection 1) Well iv been to this farmers market before so i knew what to expect but i found it interesting how there was a variety of different things being sold there like fruits, vegetables, flowers and home made arts and crafts. It was also interesting to see how many families go shopping at places like this.
2) I noticed that there wasn't anything too expensive, everything i saw seemed pretty affordable.
3) My mom purchased some stuff while we visited and she seemed to really like it so yes i think we'll be visiting the farmers market more often.
1) Why is this here? To offer people healthier foods.
2) Whats your role? I water and pick out dead plants.
3) What going to happen to the garden in the summer? I have no idea, someone might come check on it every now and then but i don't know.
4) Who's idea was it to create this? It was John the environmental teacher who came up with this idea. 5) What are you growing? All kinds of stuff, Personally i'm growing potatoes.
1) Does this inspire you? if so, in what way? In a way it does inspire me because it seems pretty cool to grow your own foods and plants. It was interesting to see all the different things the seniors were growing like strawberries, lettuce, etc.
2) What was your favorite part of the garden? My favorite part of visiting the school garden was seeing how everyone was so involved and excited to show us what they were growing.
3) Do you think the seniors care about the garden? To me it looked like they did, everyone i saw seemed involved and excited about the things they had growing in the garden.
4) Why did they come up the garden? When i asked one of the seniors why they created the garden they said it was a project that their teacher thought would be a fun way to grow healthy stuff.
-What struck me was about the movie was how the little kid died just by eating a hamburger. It goes to show that the food we eat is really unhealthy and dangerous.
Do you agree or disagree w
ith the concepts? Why? - In a way i agree because the point of the movie is to make us aware of what we are really eating and how the animals are being treated, but i also disagree with how the food system is so unhealthy and how the animals aren't even being fed the food they need to be healthy.
How can you apply them to the real world? - I can be more aware of the foods i eat and i can try having my mom shop at healthier places like Trader Joe's, i cant even try eating locally grown foods from farmers markets.
What do your parents or family members think?
- My mom thought that all this was shocking, especially how the little kid died form eating a hamburger. She also thought its wrong how the animals are being treated and how they aren't being fed the right things just because they're trying to make them fatter so that they have more meat for us to eat. We both agreed that the its good for people like the little kid's mom to be exposing all this information that people might not know about the food they eat.

Quote: Like most five-year-olds, she was thrilled to be going off to school at last, and I was thrilled for her, imagining (as she did) that some truly wonderful experience must be awaiting her. It was only after several months that I began to notice that her excitement was fading — and continued to fade month after month and year after year, until, by the time she was in the third grade she was thoroughly bored and glad for any opportunity to miss a day of school. Does this all come as strange news to you?" "Yeah," I said with a bitter laugh. "Only about eighty million kids went to bed last night praying for six feet of snow to fall so the schools would have to close." ________________________________________________________________________________ Response: This quote from the chapter was interesting to me because i found it to be true. When your younger and just starting school you expect to be in a fun environment with fun activities and your friends, but as you get older you realize that that's not how school works. You have work to do and standards to meet in order to pass a class. Not that there is anything wrong with being challenged its just that students get tired and bored easily and tend to slack off. it could be the way the teachers are teaching or simply the amount of laziness the students have towards sitting in school all day.As we get older and school becomes harder we get lazy and not want to come to school anymore.
My name is Lily, and I was eight years old when I died in a fire.
It was Saturday afternoon, and like usual mom and dad still hadn’t come home from the office.“Sweetie, were running late, there’s food in the fridge and don’t forget to tell the nanny she’s free to leave.”My mom’s calm voice projects from the answering machine. I should have known today wouldn’t be any different. The nanny had gone home early, leaving me home alone in our New York town house. You would think an adult would think twice before leaving a child unsupervised, but not my nanny. She was gone within minutes of my mother’s message. I don’t understand a lot of the things my parents do but the one thing I certainly do not understand is why my parents allowed the nanny to leave me home alone.
It must have been somewhere around 4:30 in the afternoon when the doorbell rang. Like always, I made sure to look out the window before answering the door. But I saw nothing. Ignoring it I walked back to the kitchen to check the cupcakes my nanny had left in the oven.Surprisingly I heard it again, but this time they wouldn’t stop ringing it. Knots grew in my stomach as I looked out the window once more.
“Boo!” Michel yelled as he jumped in front of the window laughing.
He wore navy blue shorts and a green t-shirt that looked as if it hadn’t been washed in weeks. His eyes were puffy as if he had just woken up from an afternoon nap. His chocolate skin matched his dark brown eyes as they twinkled in the sun light.
“Wanna play?” He says with an attitude and a slight grin on his face.
“Michel what’s the matter with you, you can’t be doing that!”
“You scared me half to death!”
I remember yelling back with my arms crossed.
“Ill be out in a second” I replied in a high pitched voice.
He had really scared me, my hands had gotten a little sweaty and my heart started racing. But, this was nothing compared to what happens next. Carelessly, I ran out the front door leaving the cupcakes in the oven.
Michel and I had been close since the 2nd grade. We did everything together. And his mother, she was the nicest person ever. She would always make home cooked meals and take us to the park unlike anything my mother would ever do.
The two of us played outside for hours. Hide and go seek was our favorite, he always had the best hiding spots and I would never find him. Our afternoons were repetitive but today was different, much different. I remember looking down at my watch that read 6:00 pm and thinking it was getting late. Michel’s mother had just called him in for dinner and my parents would probably be on their way home. I looked up, the sun was setting and the street lights had just turned on. I remember standing there in the middle of the street dazing of into space. When suddenly my nose was filled with the strong smell of smoke. I spun in a circle as I tried to figure out where the smell was coming from.
My eyes opened widely and my heart started beating faster than ever. The fear in my eyes was indescribable. If only I could go back in time. None of this would have happened. I should have checked the stupid cupcakes and maybe I would have seen they were done and turned the oven off!But that’s not what happened.
I stood on the side walk in front of my house, the flames peeking their way in and out of the windows. I could feel the heat agents my skin and starting to warm my eyes, causing them to water.
“HELP, someone please HELP!” I yelled in panic. But no one seemed to hear me.
The streets were empty and I could hear my own echo.
“HELP!”I tried yelling even louder.
I heard footsteps behind me, like someone was running in my direction.
“LILY, what happened?” Michel yells.
I turn to him, my face soaked with tears, “My cat, she’s in there I need to get her!”
“No! You’re not going in there!”
I remember him yelling as he pulled my shoulder back.
I regret this now, but at the moment I didn’t care. I ran in, Michel yelled out for help and ran after me trying to hold me back. I could tell he was trying to hold me back as hard as he could. But I wouldn’t let him.
“Leave me alone!” I yelled as I pushed him off.
“Lily don’t go inside, I’ll get help!” He said right before I ran in.
The flames were hot, and I couldn’t see anything. Black smoke rushed at me like a herd of sheep. The loud meows of my kitten filled the living room. I squinted my eyes as I tried to follow the sound of my cat’s loud and helpless meows, when suddenly I tripped. I could see myself laying there hopelessly as the smoke worked its way into my lungs. Making it harder and harder for me to breath.
I remember being in a total state of panic. I was scared and I couldn’t find my way out. Mysoft blond hair that at one point in the day had been combed neatly in two pony tails, was now messy andall over my face, covering my green eyes.
“Lily, helps on the way” I could hear Michel yelling in.
“LILY? Answer me!” He yelled again, but this time his voice sounded much closer.
I look up and saw the outline of his body standing at the front door looking in. I opened my mouth to talk, but nothing came out.
Then suddenly a soothing voice yells into the house.
“Lily sweetie where are you, are you okay?”
“It’s me, Michel’s mom can you hear me?”
I could hear the loud fire sirens coming closer as I lay there on my living room floor. A noise I never thought I would find quite soothing.
Flames got closer and I could feel the heat on my skin. The piercing pain filled my body. I screamed and cried, but no one could find me.
“Little girl were coming in, your okay now” I heard a man say in a calm and collect voice.
“Talk to me, so I know your okay!” He yelled.
But I couldn’t, I just couldn’t talk! As much as I tried nothing came out. I remember asking myself how come I couldn’tjust call for help and stay outside? Why didn’t I didn’t listen to Michel?I hate myself for doing what I did. This was all my fault. If only I had a rewind button, id go back and fix my mistake. But its too late, there’s nothing anyone can do about it now. I felt someone picking me up gently, but I was too weak to open my eyes. Everything felt as though it had happened in slow motion.
Iv learned my lesson, if I was given a second chance, I would have done things differently.
I remember my last moments so clearly. My breathing got slower and my eyes shut. My mother’s voice on the answering machine replayed in my head, Michel ringing my doorbell, the two of us playing outside, all this kept replaying like a song on repeat.
Then suddenly it just stopped. No more thoughts, no more voices. Everything was blank. My chest felt lighter and the pain was gone, I was free.
The article that i read was about a new 2010 discovery. The discovery of the TV on the go. This system will only be broadcast in select cities and will soon be transferred to net books and cell phones, making it easier to watch live games and TV shows. This new discovery is a big deal because people wont have to spend $4.00 a minute to watch TV on cell phones anymore. There is said to be a USB that will allow Lap tops to have this feature as well. The only down fall of this new function is that it will be powered by towers that will be paced in selected cities & will cost about $150,000 in each city.
In 2005 a satellite was designed to take measurements of the sea, ice, and glaciers. The satellite failed to work, making the original CryoSat satellite crash into the Arctic Ocean. In late February of this year, the space agency will get another chance to launch the satellite. This topic is important because they will be able to identify the temperatures of the polar ice caps, the ocean circulation, and the rising sea levels.
1) Goal: One of my goals for this semester is to take ownership in my work to make sure its the best it could be and that i try my hardest to complete it on time.
2) Goal: Another one of my goals for the semester is to try to step up and share more in class instead of keeping to myself and not really sharing my ideas.
Directions for the DP Reflection: Complete these steps every time you put a new project of completed assignment on your DP.
Project Description:
-What was the assignment? Describe it here.
The assignment was to learn about a specific civilization & the different parts of creating a successful civilization. we were to create a essay about the specifics of what we learned. we were also required to paint a pillar that represented the specific part of the civilization that we learned about.
Process:
-What steps did you take to get to the final product?
In order to complete the essay and the pillar i had to do a lot of research. It took many drafts and revisions in order to get the final essay. As for the pillar, we had to think about what we were going to draw that would represent our civilization. The sketch for our pillar also had to be approved.
Reflection:
-What did you learn?
I learned a lot about the Aztecs & their civilization that i didn't know before. I also learned a lot about their religion and society, and how their religious beliefs affected their daily life.
-What challenges did you encounter?
Writing the essay was somewhat of a challenge because the information i got was kind of hard to understand.
-What would you do the same or different?
I would have taken more time on the essay and made sure it was the best it could have been before actually turning it in.
-How will this help you later?
It will help me understand the topic more. It will also push me to improve my writing & allow me to include all the requirements of the essay.
Artifact:
- A physical piece of evidence that shows the project and its components.
1. To me, there are many ways to how someone can become a hero. I wouldn't say there is a certain way to define a hero. The meaning of hero can be different to one person than it is to the other.
2. Project Description: The purpose of this project was for us to chose someone that was a hero to us (personally), someone who had changed our life in a positive way. We then were to interview that person and write a character sketch describing them in their heroic moment.
3. Process: The first step to this project was to pick our hero, and explain why they are a hero to us. We then wrote our first draft and had it reviewed. The same went for the second draft. Once the final character sketch of our hero was finished we then put it into a templet that contained two pictures of our hero.
4. Reflection: I learned how to create a character sketch and how to use
Adobe InDesign. The main challenge i had was describing my hero in the character sketch, and trying to describe them in their heroic moment.
5. One of the habits of mind that I used was evidence. In my character sketch i gave a lot of evidence on how and why i consider my hero a hero in my eyes.
What strikes you about the article? The fact that people came up with zero way back then, and to think that it has traveled around the world and is now used in our daily life's.
How do we decide who discovers what? I don't think anyone is exactly sure about who discovered zero. it was first discovered in Mesopotamia around 3 B.C, but then it kept being discovered in other places as well. It was later found in India in the fifth century A.D where it was then considered a number.
Who really discovered zero? Is it the person who came up with the concept of zero or the person who discovered the actual number? I think it would be both. Considering the fact that the person who came up with the concept did not come up with the number, but yet the person who came up with the number couldn't have done so, without there already being a concept.
And how did the entire world come to a consensus without an efficient means of communication? Well the concept as well as the number zero was made my communication. And im guessing thats the same way it got spread throughout the years.
“Get up, lets go!” she says in a high pitch voice. Trying to ignore her I roll over in my bed. “Come on, get up” she says once more with a smirk on her face and her hands placed on her hips. I turn to look out my window, the sky still a light gray and the sun not fully out. There she is, standing in my doorway waiting for me to get up. She’s serious, she’s really not moving till I get up I thought to myself. The clock read 6:30 am. And with a loud groan I turned over and covered my face with my quilt. “Put your shorts on and let’s go,” she says even louder as if I didn’t hear her the first time. Not really sure of what was going on, my cousin and I got up and threw our shorts on. “Were going to the beach,” she says with a smile drawn across her face. I look into her brown eyes, tiered and still puffy. Her curly hair puffed out like a lions. Great, she’s done it again I thought. Another one of her crazy ideas. The breeze blows my hair from my face as I catch a glimpse of my mom. The waves barely reaching her feet. The mocking sound of seagulls fills the background as she stands there with her back facing me. I can’t help but to smile at the thought of me walking the beach so early on a summer morning. I try not to be too surprised. This is the kind of stuff my mom does all the time. She comes up with these crazy ideas, and does anything to follow through with them. I watch as her and my cousin kick water at each other. Her brown frizzy hair sways wildly as the wind blows in her direction. Tiny splashes of water drizzle onto her clothes. The loud sound of crashing waves fills my ears leaving me wide awake. The smile on her face says it all. “Get in, don’t be a party pooper,” she yells facing me. I smile and refuse to walk anywhere near her. I know she’s just waiting to get me wet. Drenched in water she slowly approaches me. With a smile on her face she grabs a hold of me. Her long arms wrap around my back as she hugs me. Her wet clothes stick to mine making a small, squishy sound. She squeezed tightly before letting go, leaving me soaked. The strong smell of salt water lingered on me. I watch as she walked away, her feet wet and covered in sand. Leaving a trail of big footprints behind her. She’s done it again. Done something to make everyone else have a good time. Not saying it works every time, because it doesn’t always make us have a good time, but it’s the thought that counts. She always goes out of her way to make us happy. No matter what, she always puts us first. I turn to see her dripping in water smiling back at me, her smile stretched from ear to ear. She drags her feet across the muddy sand and lets out a quiet laugh that echoes my way. The strong smell of seaweed and salt water fill my nostrils leaving me a bit light headed. I turn to my cousins one drenched in water and the other shaking her head with her arms crossed. I burry my feet in the fresh sand and smile. “She’s done it again!” I mutter under my breath.
Catching the signal from one of her friends, Angela brushed her skirt, took a deep breath and walked towards where he was sitting. His back faced her with his hood pulled over his head. The street was filled with nothing but silence as she slowly approached him. There he was, curled up into a ball like a small child. “Hey, you okay?” she shouted in his direction. Her friends on the opposite side of the street starring with their eyes stuck to him like glue. Her voice echoed down the silent street as he slowly shakes his head. Giving her friends a nervous look she fidgets with her hair and refuses to get any closer. He sat there wearing a large black sweatshirt with nothing bit his fingers tips showing. He rocked back and forth on the ice cold sidewalk. No part of his face showed and he wouldn’t respond to anyone. “Angela, who’s that?” her friend Emily whispers with her finger pointing at him. Angela shrugged her shoulders and placed her hands on her hips trying to get a good look at him. She gets closer takes a deep breath and gently pats his shoulder. He stops rocking and lets out a loud groan. Causing Angela and her friends to jump up and gasp. “Are you okay?” Angela says once again. His voice crackly and his words hard to understand “No, I’m not” he whispered. His eyes still not visible. Angela looks at her friends who are starring back with a confused look on their faces. She raised her arms and motioned them to come over. Standing there watching him the three of them try their best to get any information out of him. Nothing seemed to work, all they had caused was for him to start rocking back and forth again, but this time even faster than the last. Not sure of what to do Angela crosses the street and heads towards her house, telling her friends she would be back, “ I should get my phone so we can call for help” she shouts. Just as she walked through her front door she hears a piercing scream that fills the neighborhood. She drops her phone and runs outside. Her heart beats fast as she notices the boy is missing. Neither one of her friends are anywhere to be seen. She looks to her left, and watches a family getting in their car. She then glances to her right as kids play in their yards. And no one seemed to have heard of seen anything.
Watching the window wipers sway back and forth on the foggy windshield of my mom’s car, rain pours down on to the window making it hard to see out of. People honk their horns, with anger and swerve their way around. I sit staring at the flooded ground outside. Splashes of water fly everywhere as cars speed past. The loud rushing sound of cars driving by fills the area. I turn to look at my mom, her lips moving slowly, but yet I hear nothing. As I stay staring the raindrops slowly hit the windshield and I go blank.
Suddenly I’m in Julian. Winter vacation of 2004. The bright sun sets behind the mountain tops leaving a layer of orange, yellow, and purple in the sky. The car packed with eight of us happy and cheering aloud. When suddenly the car takes a sharp turn, spinning in a half circle along the slippery road. Nervously I bury my face deep into the pillow that lay on my lap. I can smell the clean laundry soap aroma that lingered on it.
Our heads swung forwards then backwards pulling our bodies with them. The car then fills with nothing but silence. I slowly lift my head, and staring at me is my cousin who was as pale as snow. Her arms and legs shake uncontrollably making the back seat feel like one of those massaging chairs. With my body in shock and my hands slowly starting to shake, I can feel my heart beating harder than I’d ever felt it beat before. It was so strong that I can feel it making my body vibrate with it. We sit there in the silent car staring at one another, with not one word being said.
I then feel a hand gently pat my shoulder, and all turns to darkness. The vivid memory of Julian which was once so clear is gone. My body turns numb and I slowly open my eyes. I’m back, still sitting in the passenger seat of my moms 2004 Chrysler Sebring. The rain pouring down harder than before, forcing my mom to lean forward in her seat. She squints her eyes causing her forehead to wrinkle. Her hands tightly squeeze the steering wheel as we slowly take a turn. With a strong grip, I grab a hold of the seatbelt that crosses my chest. I can’t help but to feel a sense of uneasiness.
Click here for Margaret's blog Small gurgles awaken the sea.Waves come crashing forwards then backwards. The oceans stomach growls with hunger.A rush of salty air fills the nostrils of many.Small waves come swaying towards the shore, bringing a whisper with it.The crashing and splashing cause a wave of foamy bubbles to take over.Slowly disappearing into the top layer of the mushy sand. Followed by a moment of silence. One last wave clears the ground of foamy bubbles.Waves are dragged back and forth leaving us with a refreshing sound. One deep breath is taken before jumping in.The ocean growls once more, this time louder than before.Touching the oceans bottom causes me to push myself up.A rushing noise fills my ears.Bubbles pop loudly above be.As i rise small ripples are created in the watter.A large wave comes crashing down.Smacking the ground. A sound so loud it clearly meant danger.Like a drain being unplugged the rushing sound of the oceans stomach simply disappears. silence takes over.
There was a total of 1000 lockers, and only 31 lockers were left open. The way we figured this out was by finding the factors and the perfect squares. If the locker had an odd number of factors, we knew it would end up open. For example, locker number 8’s factors are 1,2,4, and 8. As you see, there is an even amount of factors. There for the locker will end up closed. The pattern for the first ten lockers is, 2 lockers closed then 1 open, 4 lockers closed, then 1 open, 6 lockers closed, and 1open, 8 lockers closed, then 1 open, and 10 lockers closed, and 1 open, and so on. For example, locker number 1,4,9,16,25, and 36, are opened( as seen on the diagram below) This operation was repeated until we reached the last locker.
Like any other day, i spent the weekend doing chores. Helping August in the honey house, and helping May and Rosaleen do little stuff here and there. Nothing special was happening around here. There had been a few things on my mind, and no matter how hard i tried to push them away, they kept coming back. I knew it wouldn't be long before T.ray would come looking for me. Knowing him, he'd probably been pacing the living room all week wondering where id gone. I was terrified of him coming and finding me here with August. I didn't want him showing up making big fuss. But as for my mother, i felt closer to her than ever, i knew she had been here with the calender sisters, i just knew it. All i needed to do was to figure out how i would tell August about her without my whole story crumbling. I spent every night looking at the picture of Mary, hoping she would tell me what to do, hoping shed send me some kind of sign that would let me know everything was going to be alright. One of the nights i woke up to May sobbing, but of course i wasn't surprised. I could hear August and June trying to calm her down. Poor old May, couldn't even get a good nights rest without having one of her episodes. As i lay there i started to ask Mary to give May strength, to somehow take all her sorrow away to some place far from here. I heard August and June walking May out to the wall, and i decided to do something id been wanting to do. I went to Our Lady of Chains and asked her to help me figure things out. I stood there in the darkness talking to her, as if she could here me, as if there was anything she would be able to do. But i still had some hope left in me, i knew shed help me, there was something in me that just knew it.
